How do I pick a document retrieval company ?

When selecting a document retrieval company to assist you with obtaining documents and filings not available online, here are some key things to consider:

  • Does the company have a main office/contact in the same time zone as you?

  • Does the company sub-contract all work, or do they have employees in the field doing the retrievals?

  • How long has the company been in the document retrieval business?

  • Is the company good at transmitting documents in the format you require?  Email, fax, overnight?

  • What is the company's pricing schedule?  Do they charge rush fees, copy fees, transmittal fees?  Do they charge per page, or are thre flat rates?  Are there volume discounts?

  • Can you speak with some of their present customers to get a feel for their level of satisfaction?

  • Are they experts in this niche, or is this just one of dozens of services they offer?

  • How good are they at updating their customers with the status of research requests?

  • Do they understand what they are retrieving, and can they offer advise and input, or are they just doing exactly what you tell them to do?

  • Selecting a document retrieval company can be challenging, and it may take a few requests with a few different companies to find the best one to meet your specific needs.
