Florida: Panel agrees on Internet access to court documents (finally)
Dara Kam of the Palm Beach Post reports "As paper records head the way of the horse and carriage, a Florida Supreme Court committee is wrapping up a year-long struggle with balancing the public's access to court documents against the threats posed by cyber-savvy thieves.

The committee, composed of judges, lawyers and clerks of court and chaired by former House Speaker Jon Mills, agreed Monday in Tampa on a basic principle: General electronic access to court records should be available to the public.

And — despite a recent spate of security faults by data compilers, including ChoicePoint of Boca Raton — the committee also decided not to limit access to anyone, including companies that make millions of dollars raking through court files and other public records..."

Identity theft: The social security number is the root of all evil?
The ChoicePoint and other recent data thefts have been hot in the news but I had decided not to post anything concerning this because 1)It's nothing new, and 2) It's gotten more than its share of press. However, I will continue to post selectively chosen articles in this area of public records v. privacy concerns now and then. One such article, No Security in SSNs?, by Susan Kuchinskas and posted on the internetnews.com site is worth a look.

Tamara Thompson, a California private investigator, offers a divergent view to the dominant press published regarding this privacy issue on her PI News Link Blog.

Florida: Access to public records debate drags on
MANATEE - To Clearwater resident Ken Kramer, the quest for public access continues to be an uphill battle in Florida.

Kramer isn't a journalist, a detective or a lawyer. But he has frequently sought public records for his private research firm in Florida for the past seven years.

And now, more than ever, he believes Floridians need to continue pressuring legislators to keep public records accessible without further restrictions. HeraldToday.com
